Celebrating Harmony Week: Weaving together the colourful threads that shape the Australian identity

The Australian map filled in with colourful threads

There’s no doubt that Australia is a vibrant nation—a colourful mosaic woven from countless threads of different cultures, traditions and perspectives. After all, over half of Australians were born overseas or have at least one parent who was born overseas. So, our cultural diversity is at the heart of who we are. And this richness, this amazing diversity, is something to be celebrated, cherished and protected. So, what better time to celebrate than during Harmony Week (17–23 March, 2025)?

Harmony Week is about inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all Australians—from the Traditional Owners of the land to our newest arrivals.

What is Harmony Week?

Held every year in March, Harmony Week prompts us to reflect on the contributions of people from all cultures across Australian society. The core message is Everyone Belongs, reinforcing the importance of creating a safe society where everyone feels valued and respected.

Harmony Week is an important week in the Australian calendar. It prompts us to challenge stereotypes and biases, and to foster empathy. It encourages us to interact with people from different cultures, to learn from each other and to appreciate the unique perspectives that other cultures offer.

The week is a wonderful opportunity to take part in activities that promote understanding and celebrate cultural diversity—from community festivals and cultural performances to school activities and workplace initiatives. It’s a chance to build connections and foster a more inclusive Australia.
