Celebrating International Women’s Day: Empowerment, Sustainability, and a Glimmer of Hope

Let’s #AccelerateAction for gender equality.

That is the 2025 theme for International Women’s Day (IWD), celebrated on March 8th. IWD is a global event dedicated to honouring women’s accomplishments across social, economic, cultural and political spheres while advocating for gender equality.

IWD has occurred for well over a century, with the very first IWD held in 1911. The day serves as a platform to engage communities, reflect on progress, and commit to positive action.

This year, as we celebrate the achievements of women and push for a more equitable world, it’s inspiring to see new initiatives emerge that empower women and address critical global challenges. Glimmer—The Sustainability Network is one such initiative. Glimmer is a female-led social networking platform focused on sustainability and well-being awareness and collaboration.

Glimmer’s founder and CEO is Nancy Lutchman. Early in her career, Nancy worked extensively amongst women and girls in developing nations across Africa. She saw things she will never forget.

Some people had nothing, absolutely nothing. And that shouldn’t be, especially when others have so much. I was hit by the sheer inequality of the world, the brokenness of it.

Then, during the catastrophic bushfires in the summer of 2019/ 2020, Nancy recognised the power of people coming together in times of crisis. So, as an experienced digital technology leader, she created Glimmer—a platform where like-minded individuals, businesses, and organisations can connect, inspire each other, and contribute to saving our world.

Glimmer offers various features, including social media functionalities, communication tools, and a dedicated platform for businesses and organisations to showcase their sustainability initiatives. The platform emphasises positivity, inclusivity, respect, security and privacy.

Glimmer’s focus on sustainability aligns perfectly with the spirit of International Women’s Day. Women are often at the forefront of environmental movements, but are also disproportionately affected by climate change. By providing a platform for collaboration and action, Glimmer empowers women to be agents of change in building a more sustainable future.

On this International Women’s Day, let’s celebrate the progress we’ve made, acknowledge the challenges that remain, and support initiatives like Glimmer—The Sustainability Network, empowering everyone to create a better world for all.
