Festive Eco-Feasting

Flat lay of people feasting

The festive season is upon us and, for those in Australia, it’s a time for sitting in the sunshine, enjoying food, family and friends.

But, with food waste a significant issue in Australia, it’s important to think about the environmental impact of our choices and look for ways to reduce our consumption while also sharing the love.

Below we offer a few tips that might help.

Don’t overbuy

Overindulging and overestimating food needs are common pitfalls, especially during the holidays.

⭐️ Embrace Sharing: Sharing food with guests, neighbours, or those in need reduces waste and promotes community spirit. This season is a time when many are feeling the impact of being alone. So, rather than just sparing a thought for those who are having a tough time, let’s invite them to join in our festivities.

⭐️ Plan Ahead: Plan your menu in advance, focusing on locally sourced produce and seasonal ingredients. Consider native Australian foods—great options while supporting local and sustainable practices.

⭐️ Reduce Meat Consumption: Incorporate more vegetables into your festive spread—fresh salads are a yummy staple on the Australian holiday season table.

Get Creative with Leftovers

Leftovers don’t have to go to waste! Transform them into delicious meals like frittatas, pies, or pizza toppings. Freezing leftovers extends their shelf life and saves time and money later. And share the leftovers around!

Don’t Forget to Donate

Food insecurity is a serious concern—many people are struggling with financial hardship— and research shows there is a continuing increase in the number of people needing to access food charities like Foodbank and OzHarvest. These organisations play a crucial role in supporting those in need and are always thankful for much-needed financial donations—some will also accept food donations but please contact them first to check.

So, if you’re gathering to enjoy festivities this week, remember to share the love (and the food!). Let’s make this holiday season a sustainable one!
